Halloween

My oral presentation wasn't as I expect. I was very nervous an the words didn't come to me.
At first I started with my personal introduction an then when I had to explain how about Halloween or what is Halloween it was a disaster.
I have prepared a lot all the presentation (the oral part, the text and images and gifts to put on the power pint) but when I had all my classmates I became in white.)
So, I decided to put all the words that I have to say:

Slide 1: Presentation
Greetings: ok, let's get started. Good morning/afternoon everybody. My name is Elisabet and I am a student at IES Castelló. I'm 16 years old.
Today I want to talk to you about Halloween.

Hooks: Do you know that Halloween has been the other Monday? Did you celebrated it? Did you say trick or treat?

Slide 2: Index
First I will explain the little history and etymology. After I will explain the symbols and traditions in Halloween. Finally I'll make some questions.

Halloween is a yearly holiday observed around the world on October 31st , the night before All Saints' Day. It 's called the Day of the Dead. The festival started on evening and continued until the next day.

Slide 3: History
Halloween was born in the 16th century and is a Celtic tradition. They believed the spirits of dead people came alive and ghosts, witches and evil spirits returned on this day.
The Celts lived in Europe more than 2000 years ago. 1st of November they celebrated the end of summer. They thought ghosts visited the living on October 31st. They dressed up like spirits so that spirits would not harm them.
Halloween is an old tradition in Ireland and Scotland. In those countries, the people dressed up and carried lanterns made of turnips.
When people moved from Ireland and Scotland to the United States, they started using pumpkins. This is where the jack‐o’‐lantern comes from.
There is also a tradition of give food to spirits. Later, they gave the food to poor people. This is where trick‐or‐treating comes from.

Slide 4: Symbols
Well, Halloween is not just innocent entertainment. It's symbols and practices breathes new life into the dark rituals and symbols of past civilizations. Many of this symbols are universal; they are familiar to people in many parts of the world.
There are a lot symbols in this special night:
  • the colours of Halloween are orange and black
  • the Celts believed that black cats, had special powers.
  • Fire:Has symbolized warmth and protection as well as death and destruction to cultures around the world.
  • Blood: The bloody knives, victims, and vampires featured in today's popular games, movies and Halloween parties show the timeless allure of gore and violence.
  • BATS: The only mammal that feeds on blood, they use sharp incisor teeth to cut the holes needed to suck blood from its victim.
  • GHOSTS: A universal symbol for departed spirits and occult visitations.
  • Scary figures: witches, bats, vampires, skeletons, spiders...

Slide 5: Traditions
Halloween now is an exciting event in the United States and in Great Britain.
  • Many people dress up in costumes and masks on, can be scary or funny.
  • People go to Halloween parties.
  • Children play trick or treat. They go in costumes from houses to houses, asking for treats such as candy or money, with the question: ''Trick or treat''. Sometimes people say: sucker ''trick or treat'' smell my feet give me something good to eat!!
  • People play bobbing for apples
  • People make Jack – o – lanterns with pumpkins and put them in the gardens or in the windows, because everybody can see it.

Slide 6: Catalan traditions
Catalan traditions about Halloween is very similar to English Halloween. People of our age celebrate Halloween going to night parties dressed as ghosts, zombies, witches...

In Catalonia the most typical in this days is eating chestnuts an panallets, but Halloween is stronger year by year.

The hierro volcano eruption

El Hierro volcano has started an eruption last July. Between the 30th August and 3rd September seismic events has passed as a normal steps in a volcanic eruptions.

Most of these events have been at magnitudes of around 2 (+/-0.5) in the Richter scale and the earthquakes have been between 9 and 10 Km (the deeper quake) of depth. The shallowest has been around 4 Km as 1 Km. There is an oval area (that is shown in the image of the report) of 10 Km depth full of earthquakes undersea near the town of La Restinga (shown in the background of the image).

El Hierro is a basaltic volcano which has been active in 1973. It’s possible than the magma is coming up from a magma chamber above the sea. The majority of magma intrusions don’t reach the surface.

For now it’s too early to tell or explain what will happen, so we have to keep watching every day the news. The latest news speaks about lava tubes. When the flow of lava suddenly stops (like it has happened twice at El Hierro) a tube is formed. Some tubes are very long. The longest lava tube is the Don Gusto tube that measures an incredible 6.315 Km. The Don Gusto has been closed because of the fear of getting people lost!

The most probable scenario is that La Restinga vent will open again when the magma pressure builds. The last week there were found pumice (pyroclastics) and an increase in carbon dioxide emissions. The emission of CO2 is one of the parameters of volcanic eruption precursors but has to be joined with others indicators such as deformation and seismicity depth.

Elisabet: Hi Joana. How are you?
Joana: Hey Elisabet. Not bad! :(
Elisabet: What's the matter?
Joana: This weekend I went to my aunt's weeding. It hasn't been a perfect wedding. I had a very hard time!
Elisabet: Really? What happened??
Joana: A lot of thing.
Elisabet: Tell me the first bad things.
Joana: When I finished painting my nails I got dressed...
Elisabet: Ohh! Joana! Don't tell me that your beautiful dress got dirty with the nail polish?
Joana: Yeeesss! :( I was very silly but I was in a hurry. My mother didn't wake me up because our rabbit had given birth.
Elisabet: Oh my God! That's too much before starting the ceremony. This is your bad thing or it to continue...?
Joana: Oh no. This is only the beginning. When I was going to the church I tripped up with the step.
Elisabet: Don't worry girl, this could happen to anyone, anywhere and at any time.
Joana: Of course but not in a wedding.
Elisabet: Did it hurt?
Joana: At first yes, but then I forgot everything, because when I was taking a photo to the engaged couple I pushed the photographer (JAJAJAJAAJA) and he made a photo of the priest instead of bride and bride groom.
Elisabet: What a shame. I went to a zoological garden. I had a great time because I stayed there with my cousin and the little one is two months old. He's very cute.
Joana: Oh, he seems so pretty. When I was in the restaurant with my rude cousin, one of them drank the water with his nose.
Elisabet: Oh my God, you have a very weird cousin. With my cousins I visited a lot of animals: zebras, lions, beers, elephants, penguins, snakes, tigers, kangaroos and a very strange fishes: You know the fish could be transparent or with a lot of colours.
Joana: You had a short and exiting weekend.
Elisabet: It was wonderful.
Joana: My weekend ends, when I broke the heel of my new shoes getting off the car.
Elisabet: really? My God, you had an awful weekend. I hope the next one will be better.
Joana: Thanks, I have to go, my mum is waiting for the lunch.

THE END! :D

Comparison Adrian Mole versus Thirteen

If I have to compare The secret diary of Adrian Mole and Thirteen is talk about adolescence. Both stories are about adolescence or adolescent people. Both Adrian and Tracy are thirteen years old guys. They are looking for their own personality and are rounded by other guys. I think that Adrian Mole is lighter than thirteen in this sense. Adrian Mole spoke about Adrian and Pandora, the relation between Adrian’s parents meanwhile in thirteen the path is in drugs, sex and steals.

Both stories have broken families with their parents with new partners and none of them (Adrian and Tracy) like it. They have problems to communicate with their respectably mothers but they don’t found their space neither house nor life.

There is a background in the two stories full of society problems like unemployment, family problems, difficult relationships, old people... they are a hard criticism of our modern society (difficult to understand when you are thirteen).

Adrian is full of humour but Thirteen is a heavy vision of the same problem. Adrian writes a funny poem without any sense it’s funny! Tracy and Evie passed very hard situations than Adrian never has to.

Summery: Thirteen

The story is about Tracy Freeland. She is 13 years old and she is good in her studies. She has a difficult family situation (divorce, lack of money, the boyfriend's mother is junkie named Brad, and was in rehab several times, etc..) Feels so bad, but apart from that, in the school few people pay attention because she is shy, and pretty girl, and dresses like a normal girl who had 12-13, neither bad or good, neither sexy or provocative. Tracy needs to change her situations she needs to become more famous in her adolescence world. Like Evie and she meets her. Evie is the opposite of Tracy. She is the coolest in all Los Angeles middle School. She is the most popular and the most beautiful and sexy girl there.

They become to be friends. Tracy changes for completely. Evie carries Tracy in a world full of sex, drugs and little crimes like stealing money from shops and stores. Tracy dress and make up exactly as Evie. The Tracy's mother don't like that her son do this things. Tracy spent all the day at Evie's home. She takes many confidence and fond of Tracy’s mother until she asks her if she can take as son, since she lives with her aunt and she is crazy. Tracy's mother goes to tell her auntie that she can't be his daughter.

The film ends when Tracy's mother enters her room and she finds the drug, also she sees that her son was cut the veins. She says there has been Evie and Evie says the opposite. They end up without speaking. And they follow different paths. Tracy has just reconciled with her mother.

Summery: The secret diary of Adrian Mole

This is a book about Adrian Mole. Adrian is a thirteen and ¾ years old boy who has decided to write his own diary. In the diary he will explain all his feelings, his relatives, his thoughts and at the end his life.

The diary starts the first day of the year with eight resolutions for the Ney Year. His parents are not as the typical ones. He thinks that they are alcoholic. His mum gives him always unhealthy food. Suddenly his parents get ill so, his neighbour, Mr. Lucas began to visit his mum as more as is the normal.

At school Adrian met Pandora and he falls in love. At the same time he joins a group called the Good Samaritans. With this group he has to help an old man called Bert Baxter. This old man has a dirty and old house with a dirty dog. Al school things don’t go as he expect since Pandora is going out with his best friend, Nigel.

Adrian’s parents argue a lot and his mum starts to work with Mr. Lucas lots of hours. Problems arise when Adrian’s classmate demands money and he hasn’t. In March Adrian’s parents split and he feels very sad. Adrian’s mother leaves Adrian’s father to go with Mr. Lucas.

In April things go worse: there isn’t so much money to by money, to pay electricity, etc...and Adrian’s father is dating with a woman called Doreen Slater. Adrian’s father loses his job and he starts to drink and to smoke so the grandmother arrives to help and change de situation.

But suddenly Adrian and Pandora fall in love. Bert Baxter has to come to the hospital for health problems but he escapes and moves into the house of the neighbours of Adrian with an Indian family. In June Pandora goes on holidays and Adrian spends much money phoning her. Baxter fall in love with an old lady who met in the pensioner home. She is Queenie.

In November Adrian’s mother sends a telegram that she returns home and his parents fall in love again. In January Bert marries with Queenie and his father finally finds a job. The diary ends on April 3, a day after Adrian’s birthday.

Two little princess

One upon a time there was a young princess who was singing all the day. She was beautiful and so clever. She lived in an old castle, next to the wood, with her younger sister. She was tall, slim and stylish. Her hair was so long that she had to pick it up to avoid being stepped on.

They couldn't leave out the castle until they were sixteen. She needed one more pear one year. Her father was the king for a lot of years, in this town, and he spent all the time in the wars. Her mother was all day looking at the window and sewing silk pillows. She took care of all the people while her husband was fighting for their land belongs to them.
One day, the princes and her sister decided to go out of the castle, because they wanted to see other people and made friends. Immediately that they left the castle they heard a dog bunking. At first, they were frightened but, after they went with him and he became an old man. He explained them that that night there would be would be a fantastic party in the neighbour castle. The princess was seeing this castle since she was born, but she never had stayed in it. The old man disappeared quickly, but the princess's sister saw him, and he became a frog.

The younger ladies visited the little town (they had never been there before). They saw a bakery and they went in because they were hungry. The baker called Thomas, was fat, was not good looking and he was fifty years old. But Thomas was very kind and extrovert. He asked them what they wanted. He invited them to a cup of coffee and some biscuits. Suddenly they fell asleep. When they woke up, they were in a strange dark room. The girls realized that their dresses had changed: the dresses were long, brilliant and very beautiful made of gold and silk. The door opened and the old man invited them to enter in the party.

The party was so funny and nice, they were dancing all the night. They met there two elegant princes from that castle. They fell in love but the two girls had to go home because the king had arrived from the war and he wanted to see to his daughters. He punished them one year more to go out of the castle.

A very special day

My favourite celebration in Catalonia is The New Year's Eve. This day marks the beginning of a new calendar year. New Year's Eve is often celebrated at social gatherings, during which people dance, eat, consume... All people look forward to the 31st of December because it's a very long and funny night.

Lots of people celebrated this with their family, others with their friends... Normally, New Year is celebrating in the houses with a big dinner, later everybody turns on the TV and waits to be twelve o'clock. When it is twelve o'clock and the bells ring, somebody eat twelve grapes. When people are eating twelve grapes (one one each chime of the clock) it’s normal to wish some special resolutions like Adrian Mole in his diary. The most famous is to stop smoking or like Adrian not to start smoking, be better person and help to other people. After everybody is celebrating the arrival of a new year, playing music, throwing firecrackers... After the clock has finished people greet each other and toast with sparkling wine or cava or champagne. After the family dinner and the grapes, many young people attend New Year parties at pubs or similar places (these parties are called cotillones de nochevieja). Parties usually last until the next morning.

I celebrate it with my family every year. My dad, my mother, my sister and me with my cousins and my uncles celebrate it all together. We usually go to restaurant for New Year in Camprodon. Then I go out with my friends to celebrate this fantastic day. We go to the sports centre there where there are music until six or seven o'clock in the morning. Next morning party has a winter breakfast of chocolate con churros.

In other cultures they don’t eat grapes at 12 o’clock but I think that it is celebrated in different ways around the world. Spanish New Year’s Eve (Nochevieja in Spanish, Cap d’Any in Catalan, Nit de Fi d’Any in Valencian, Cabo d’Anyo in Aragonese) are traditionally including wearing new, red underwear to wait luck in the next opening year. The actual countdown is followed from the clock on the top of the Casa de Correos building in Puerta del Sol Square in Madrid.
